From the day Matilda was born she was unappreciated and unnoticed by her parents.

She learned at a very young age the only one she could rely on was herself. She started feeding, dressing and taking care of herself as her family went on with their daily lives. She longed for an education and dreamed of a school she would go to, but until then she started making her way to the public library. Every day she walked the ten blocks needed to quench her thirst for knowledge. When the principal of a local school needed a car she went to Matilda's father and told him about the school.

Matilda's father, who was dealing in stolen car parts allowed his daughter to attend the school. Trunchball Hall was a scary school, dull and drab but had kid's there just the same, so Matilda was happy. She met her best friend and had a wonderful teacher Miss Honey who held a deep secret. Matilda showed such a high quality of comprehension that Miss Honey wanted to move her up into a higher grade, but the Trunchball as she was called would not allow that.
